ESSS Committee 2013/14

President - Jack Connors

I’m from Brighton and I love watching/playing sport - I’m a Leeds United fan (unfortunately) and play rugby. I like a good night out, and you’ll find most of ES and I in Sobar on Tuesdays… The serious side of me loves sustainability - anything from how businesses can become more sustainable to how sustainability can be marketed to the public.

As a committee we are looking to organise as many events as possible - from Conservation trips to pub-crawls, so don’t be shy! Get involved with as much as you can, there are great people in ES it’s up to you to meet them all!

Feel free to contact me, any ideas are always appreciated and I will help you out with any problems you have. If you see me around say Hi and lets hope we have a great year!

Vice President - Laura Barnes

Hey I’m Laura and I’m so excited to be your new Vice President!

I’m originally from Hertfordshire and love anything environmentally related (cliché I know!). I have my own business in the health and wellness industry and from that have a new interest in sustainable businesses and green living.

You’ll recognise me straight away as I’m most likely the tiniest person you’ll meet - but hey the best things come in small packages!

I am involved with the University Green Label project which is developing ‘eco-labels’ for the shops and cafés around campus as well as a student ambassador for the FREdome Visionary Trust charity which work on sustainability projects. I am also heavily involved in the dance societies that the university have to offer so feel free to ask me anything about Environmental Science or the uni in general.

I am overseeing the newsletter this year so if you would like to write an article please feel free to email me.

We have planned so many exciting things for this year and we really hope you all get involved with everything we will be offering. If you have any ideas on projects or events you would like or if you would just like a chat then please do not hesitate to get in touch!

Look forward to meeting you all!

Secretary - Jade Cohen

I’m Jade, you’re new ES secretary!

I originally come from Brighton, and I’m interested in climate and carbon management. I am currently involved with the University Green Label project in helping develop ‘eco-labels’ for the shops and café, and general promotion of sustainability around the campus. I used to be part of a championship brass line in ‘6th Hove’ drum corps, and competed in competitions around the UK and Europe, and have a non-identical twin sister!

Treasurer - Will Warren

Hey Everyone; I’m Will! Or you can call me Warren, old habits die hard, you can ask me why sometime. I’m comparatively northern to the south coast, coming from around the (I was about to say sleepy, but there’s another ‘s-word’ for it) town of Northampton.

In the ESSS Committee, I’m the Treasurer; I look after all the money, basically – and have a nice Excel column where I try to keep the income above the spending, so we can enjoy doing things as a society even more. Personally, I’m not much of a numbers guy – but money is different to maths after all.

I’m a country boy at heart, but Southampton is the only city I’ve ever really enjoyed. I recommend the New Forest for the hikers and cyclists among you, especially if you have a car. I can hold my own in a drinking contest, and will probably challenge some of you Freshers at some point.

Don’t be afraid to get in touch, we’re here for you guys, and we look forward to meeting each and every one of you wonderful lot.

Conservation Officer - Jenny Abery

Hi! I’m Jenny Abery and I am your Conservation Officer. I have interests in wildlife conservation and as a result, I am on the biodiversity and conservation pathway. Join me and Rebecca (Sustainability Officer) for volunteering trips, which are great fun and are an essential part of your CV. We are also planning a New Forest Walk, in the spring of 2014, which will be a great opportunity to experience our local national park. More details will be given closer to the time.

If you have any questions about life at the University of Southampton, conservation, or would like more information on volunteering opportunities, please contact me by email.

Look forward to meeting you all soon!

Sustainability Officer - Rebecca Keens

Hi everyone, I’m Rebecca and I’m your Sustainability officer for this year! I’m into anything to do with carbon emissions, renewable energy and environmental policy, so it’s not hard to guess I’m on the Sustainable Management pathway. I’m currently involved in the ‘Green Label Project’ at Southampton, and have taken part in other environmentally-themed activities too, all of which have been great fun.

My role on the committee is to organise events and create opportunities for you to get involved with anything sustainability-related. I’ll be working closely with Jenny (Conservation Officer), and so far we’ve come up with a beach clean-up, contact with Southampton City Council, and a potential visit to a wind farm. We’ll also be releasing a ‘timeline’ of events around the university that you might be interested.

If you have any questions on events or uni in general; feel free to get in touch!

Social Sec's - Sarah Kelly and Emma Scott

Hi guys! I’m Emma; I am one half of your social sec. team along with Skelly. Our job is to organise all of the ES socials, from nights out to pub quizzes and the very important Christmas Ball. I am in the Conservation & Biodiversity pathway, so yes I do love all the cute and fluffy animals that need saving! But obviously I do also enjoy nights out and I’ll do my best to organise some great ES events! We’ll be organising a fresher’s night out soon after you arrive so everyone can get to know each other and make FRIENDS!!! Hope to see you soon, Emma

Hello! I’m Skelly and I’m the other half of your social sec team for the next year. One of our main aims though the socials over the coming year is to integrate all the years and get all you Freshers involved and get rid of this imaginary barrier that stops freshers being friends with second years etc. I am on the Environmental Change pathway and am currently waiting on the brainwave for an awesome idea that will save the world but until then I will use my spare time to organise some amazing socials for everyone! I look forward to meeting everyone at the start of the new term, Skelly

Sports Sec - Pippa Guest

Hi everyone! I’m Pippa – your female sports secretary! My job is to manage as many of your sporting needs as possible; from football to netball, rugby to swimming, we can do it all! Each year there are intra mural sports events, where different courses and their faculties, including us, compete against each other to see who is the best at each sport (obviously it’s us, right?!). But don’t worry if you’re not quite up for competing – we organise recreational and fun matches too, particularly football and netball!

If you’re interested in any sport and would like to do it with fellow ES students, to compete or to simply have fun, drop me an email and I’ll try my best, along with Ollie (male sports secretary) to accommodate what you want!

I’m from a small-ish town called Kidderminster, about 20 miles from Birmingham, so anyone from the Midlands who wants to hear a familiar accent – I’m your girl! I’m really easy to talk to and could yabber on all day, so if you have any questions about sports teams, uni life, the course or anything at all I’m more than happy to help! I’m a keen swimmer myself but have done trampolining, horse riding and gymnastics as well!

Sports Sec - Oliver Render

Hi everyone I am male sports secretary so I’ll be looking to manage as many intra mural sports teams as ES wants. Sports fan interested in football, golf and cricket mainly, my sporting career probably peaked when I got to the semi finals of the Kent regional chess championship ‘06, yep still proud today. In all seriousness I like all other things like socials, films and chilling out with friends.

International Officer - Elena Lebedef

I was born in Luxemburg from Italian and Greek parents growing up in a really mix culture. Lived my whole life in Luxemburg where green pastures flourish has I travelled around Europe I couldn’t but notice the differences in caring about the environment in each country especially when spending all my summers in Greece and seeing all the trash and pollution ending up in our waters, seas and oceans ruining not only the earths ecosystems but also our health. This became one of the major reasons why I chose the aquatic pathway in Environmental sciences after finishing my first year I still believe I made the right choice and enjoyed the year in the aquatic pathway.

International Officer - Michael Adams

Hi I'm Michael, I was born in the Turks and Caicos islands and have done most of my studies there I have always being interested in the field of science particularly biology, I got interested in  environmental science ever since I participated in an annual science fair in back in my home town Grand Turk. Since then I decided to pursue further in Environmental science achieving an associate’s degree in Environmental Science and now I have successfully completed my first of Environmental science Bsc program.

You can count on your International officers

Studying aboard is never easy, from my experience I found it challenging to adjust to the new culture, rather festive behavior Uni -life can become also managing my time appropriately. Well as your international officers there will always be time to chat with me or Elena -  we will always try our best to help with any difficulties you may experience , create opportunities to get to know local native students and for them to experience your culture as well. Each individual is unique rather if it’s your way of living, the way you speak, your sense of humor and your traditions and practice each international student  part take. We are your International officers to help you to have the best experience during your uni-life can’t wait to meet you.

Media and Communications - Freddie Crouch

Studying on the sustainable environmental management pathway I am particularly interested in renewable energy sources, particularly hydropower schemes and management having largely focused on this in my 1st year.

My role within the committee is to maintain the various platforms for communication between members of the UoS Environmental Science Student Society. These include the society’s facebook and twitter pages that will provide you with all the information regarding social events and other activities you may wish to become involved in. These will also be used as a place to post any questions or other queries regarding your first year in Environmental Science.

I am also responsible for sorting out tickets to socials and all other Environmental Science events and play a part in organising and putting together the monthly newsletter.

Enjoy the year!
